Kanakana is an app for learning hiragana and katakana, made by funclosure. Using it means agreeing to these terms and to Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement, which governs every app from the App Store.

What is free and what is bought

Kanakana is free to download. The あ row of hiragana and of katakana is free with every feature. One one-time purchase, 五十音, opens every other row of both scripts. It is not a subscription and does not expire. Later content, such as dakuten and combination kana, may be sold separately and is never taken out of 五十音.

Apple handles the payment. Refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. 五十音 can be shared with your family through Family Sharing, and restored on a new device from Settings › Purchases › 五十音 › Restore purchase.

The beta

Beta versions are for testing. They may have mistakes, and a beta build expires after 90 days. Purchases made in TestFlight are free and do not carry over to the App Store version.

What is in the app

The stroke order comes from KanjiVG by Ulrich Apel, under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 licence; the stroke file Kanakana uses is published under the same licence at github.com/funclosure/kanakana-strokes. The fonts, Zen Old Mincho and Zen Kaku Gothic New, are under the SIL Open Font License. The voice is Fumi, made with ElevenLabs. Everything else in the app is © 2026 funclosure.

No warranty

Kanakana is provided as it is. It is made with care to teach well, but no promise is made that it is free of errors or that it suits every purpose, to the extent the law allows.
